<span style="font-size: large;"><b>Huzzah Hufflepuffs!</b></span>Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09734433752886808932noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2729151915520341932.post-26366328871114106882013-12-17T17:41:00.000-08:002013-12-17T17:43:04.960-08:00Photography Puffs: Make The Most of Your Pictures<h2>
<span style="font-weight: normal;"><i>Today we have a guest post from 'Puff photographer extraordinaire <b>ashleybah</b>! </i></span></h2>
<br />
So you've done it. You've finished knitting, crocheting, spinning, or dyeing your homework. You've written up a stellar story to make your homework fit the assignment. All that's left is taking a picture of the darn thing so you get those points that we all crave so much.<br />
<br />
Unfortunately, as great as your story may be, the picture is all the professors have to <i>see</i> your homework. Don't just slap the first picture you take on your turn-in! You want to milk that project for all the points you can get. Here's a couple of things to keep in mind to make sure your pictures show the graders exactly what you've got going on! ;)<br />
<br />
(Keep in mind that not <i>every</i> tip here applies to every situation. Take from it what you want. What's important is that you are happy with how your pictures represent your hard work. Take pride in your work! That's the Hufflepuff Way!)<br />
<br />
<b>#1. Know your camera!</b><br />
<br />
Whether you are using your cell phone, a pocket point-and-shoot, or a fancy DSLR, you need to get acquainted with your camera. Check out those settings. One big setting to look out for is "white balance." This is the setting that can make your colors look way different in the picture than what you see in real life.<br />
<br />
Most camera phones and cameras have a white balance set to "auto." This doesn't always work out for all of us. If you find your colors are coming out funky, try looking for your white balance setting. You'll find options like incandescent and fluorescent (typical indoor light options), and daylight and cloudy (outdoor light options).<br />
<br />
Here's some examples of how white balance can make a difference:<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/solleyam/11259096244/" title="1_whitebalance by solleyam, on Flickr"><img alt="1_whitebalance" height="214" src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7378/11259096244_3ca7406f8b_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
Sometimes it isn't even a huge difference, but the colors feel just a little cold or off. For example, the picture on the left below on "auto" isn't <i>bad</i>, per se. It's just not true to the real colors, which were warmer, and more fun! Just a little adjustment can make a difference in how the picture feels.<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/solleyam/11259159573/" title="1_whitebalance2 by solleyam, on Flickr"><img alt="1_whitebalance2" height="214" src="http://farm3.staticflickr.com/2849/11259159573_19ca709084_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
Another good setting to pay attention to is ISO. If the "auto" setting is giving you photos that are too washed out or too dark, try playing with the ISO setting. ISO is how sensitive your camera is to light. If you are outside in bright, direct light, you want to pick the lowest sensitivity setting, 100. If it's cloudy or shady outside, try a little higher like 200 to 400. If you are using indoor light, you want your camera to be more sensitive to light, so move that ISO on up to 800 to 1200.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/solleyam/11258992316/" title="1_ISO by solleyam, on Flickr"><img alt="1_ISO" height="214" src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7354/11258992316_f3d050c84c_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
Play with your camera and really look at your pictures after you take them. Adjust the settings and see what changes. You'll be a master in no time!<br />
<br />
<b>#2. Light, light, light!</b><br />
<br />
We all know that our pictures just come out looking better if we can get a hold of some good ol' natural light. Even with all the settings adjusting tricks I've got, those indoor pictures just don't compare to natural light. So if you can, go outside!<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/solleyam/11264230843/" title="2_light2 by solleyam, on Flickr"><img alt="2_light2" height="214" src="http://farm3.staticflickr.com/2851/11264230843_f2e554b02a_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
Also, watch those shadows! Sometimes being outside can cast weird ones!<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/solleyam/11259163535/" title="2_light by solleyam, on Flickr"><img alt="2_light" height="421" src="http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5512/11259163535_0861b1e4c7_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
<b>Sub-tip: Turn off that flash!</b><br />
<br />
Now, I know a lot of us are crafting down to the last minute, leaving some of us stuck taking a picture at night. But even if you find yourself in this dark situation, <i>flash is not the answer</i>. Flash has a nasty habit of washing out your colors, making the shadows too dark, and giving people red face or demon eyes.<br />
<br />
Find a room with nice light! Grab another lamp! Play with your settings! Make flash your absolute last resort.<br />
<br />
<b>#3. Find a warm body!</b><br />
<br />
Is your homework something that is worn? That object actually being worn in the picture can do wonders! It gives the project more life and makes the picture much more interesting. The picture below of my Hufflepuff cowl laying on my table is pretty boring and doesn't tell anyone much about how it fits, or even <i>what it is</i>. If you've got a cute kid, adoring significant other, or even a pet that doesn't mind posing for a few minutes, GRAB 'EM.<br />
<br />
Even a mirror shot is better than just laying your homework on the ground and shooting it flat.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/solleyam/11259233225/" title="3_warmbody by solleyam, on Flickr"><img alt="3_warmbody" height="214" src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7443/11259233225_5186061154_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
<b>#4. Watch your backgrounds!</b><br />
<br />
First of all, you want to chose a background that complements your project. At the very least find a background that isn't too similar to your project, which will make your project disappear.<br />
<br />
The picture below on the left has a distracting background because it's all bubbly, much like the puffy charm. Also the positioning of my hand makes the charm sort of disappear into the shadows, so it's not easy to see what it going on, especially at a smaller resolution. The picture on the right worked out a little better because the background is darker and my hand is out from behind the charm, which makes it pop a bit more!<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/solleyam/11264397183/" title="4_background by solleyam, on Flickr"><img alt="4_background" height="214" src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7395/11264397183_9f97c800a4_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
Also, you want to make sure there's nothing in the background that you don't want other people to see. I can't tell you how many pictures I thought came out perfectly, only to find that my dog was standing beside my face in the background doing his business in the backyard. Needless to say, I had to take those pictures again. :|<br />
<br />
I was going to include a great example picture I found while digging up samples, but I decided to spare your eyes. I'll describe it to you instead. I was sitting on the ground with my knees to my chest so my boyfriend could snap a quick picture of my socks. Well I didn't put much thought about what I was wearing or the pose, and with my rather short shorts and my boyfriend's up-close angle of the socks, the background ended up being <i>my butt</i>! So, you know, watch out for stuff like that. ;)<br />
<br />
<b>#5. Take LOTS of photos! </b><br />
<br />
I can't stress this enough. For every one picture I upload online, I promise there were 10-20 pictures just like it that were either not in focus, or my face was doing something weird, or my dog was pooping in the background. Take a lot of photos, and take multiple pictures from each angle you think you might use.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/solleyam/11259451315/" title="5_photos by solleyam, on Flickr"><img alt="5_photos" height="313" src="http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3798/11259451315_f1f258b5a8.jpg" width="500" /></a><br />
<br />

<br />
<b>Honey Badger Cete</b><br />
by thatgirl1225<b> </b><br />
<br />
This was my first term as a full student of the House Cup. I knew
very early on in my NQFY term that I wanted to be sorted into
Hufflepuff. I could feel a sense of family, here in Hufflepuff. As a
Firstie, I was not let down at all! Between the camaraderie in the
Uncommon room to the warmest welcome and embracing I received in my cete
(go Honey Badgers!), I felt like I had snuggled into my perfect corner
of the Den. I knew I didn’t ever want to leave! I have truly enjoyed the
competitive push I got from my fellow Puffs; I wanted to contribute as
much as I could to our points, but I also never felt like I was being
pushed to give more than I could (for several weeks, I was out with an
elbow injury).<br />
My hats are off to all of our staff members in Hufflepuff! Between
the activities, spreadsheets, cheerleading and help, our Puff staffers
have done a fantastic job making this term go by so smoothly (and
quickly!!). I know that I used a ton of the tidbits throughout the Den,
as well as getting direct help from my cetemamas (<a href="http://www.ravelry.com/people/craftyshanna">craftyshanna</a> and <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/people/RavenLuna">RavenLuna</a>)
and cetemates. One day, I hope to be in a position in my life where I
can be a staffer, give back a little of what I’ve gotten during just my
first term!<br />
The people in Hufflepuff have been the warmest, friendliest, and most
encouraging folks that I’ve met online in a very long time! I used to
be part of an online community, where I felt like I had found a family,
but it unfortunately didn’t last. Now, in Hufflepuff, I’m feeling like
I’ve found that again and it feels so good! I’ve made quite a few
friends, particularly in my cete, although when looking back I realize
that it wouldn’t have been hard because Hufflepuff is filled with such
awesome people!<br />
I love Hufflepuff for all these reasons, plus it would just be plain hard not to! The muffins don’t hurt, either! <br />
<br />
<b>From WAgirl98</b><br />
<br />
I am a Knitting Ninja. At least according to the pin I have on my
knitting bag. I stealthily transform ordinary yarn into extraordinary
things.<br />
However, this year, in the midst of making numerous items for
Christmas gifts I found that I lost my drive to make those extraordinary
things. I was ending up with Works-In-Progress, not much drive to
finish them, and nothing made for myself.<br />
I have actually been a member of the Cup group for awhile, but never
participated. After a couple others, a fellow Hufflepuff and a
Slytherin, encouraged me to try it I signed up and am so glad I did! The
class assignments gave me fun ways to finish many of those
Works-In-Progress, start and finish other projects, and to make myself
something in my queue I had wanted to make for a long long time. It was
structured without boxing me in. I had a deadline, but was able to fit
whatever I wanted to make into the prompts.<br />
This is why I love my Hufflepuff Family and the HouseCup! Now I have
my Knitting Ninja mojo back again and I’m looking forward to Pufflecards
during the break month, and a second tearm next month!<br />

<b>Ch-ch-changes, The Hufflepuff Way</b><br />
by LadyDragonsinger<br />
<br />
<br />
I hate change.<br />
Totally absolutely can’t stand it.<br />
Doesn’t mean I won’t do it but I don’t like the upheaval involved.<br />
I took a rather long sabbatical from the House Cup after it’s second
year. It was the fact that some changes had been made in how it was
organized that allowed a friend to convince me to do so. This was not
enough change to terrify me as it really did not fully affect me. It was
a change that I did not actually have to “live through” as it were.<br />
However, when I left, Hufflepuff Common Room was simply one thread on
the House Cup Group so I was a bit surprised when I didn’t see it (or
any common rooms) on the discussion board there. That is until I found
out it was a group of it’s own.<br />
Now, we’re getting into scary territory. BIG change. Whole new group. New ways of interacting in the group.<br />
Cue me being dragged into this virtually kicking and screaming. I had
decided it was too big and too scary for me to do anything more than
maybe converse in the Common Room thread. That lasted one day when I
woke up to find several pages of conversation that had to be read.<br />
Okay, fine, I decided. I would just do my projects, post my classes,
notify the Den with posts in the Common Room thread that I had posted my
classes and Advanced Studies. That worked fairly well for my first term
back.<br />
Then the Pufflecards post went up and I thought there was no way I’d do much there. <em>coughcough managed to get a complete set coughcough</em><br />
But I still wasn’t thrilled about how the simple thread for the house
had become this big active group. However, it turns out there was
another change in store. This term we were required to be in a cete. I’m
not a joiner and, in case you hadn’t realized it yet, I’m not thrilled
with change. I had no idea what cete would be a good fit but I
remembered posting in one last term for a challenge so when we had to
fill in which one we wanted, I picked that one.<br />
Change can be good.<br />
<em>waits for audience to recover from the shock of me saying that</em><br />
This one was. I found the cete to be warm, welcoming and supportive. I
even branched out and posted in and used “The Hufflepuff Way” thread
and Huffletainment and a few other threads I’d never thought I’d be
involved in.<br />
Change can be good. Cetes can be and are very good. The Hufflepuff Way does work.<br />

Here are some from September, to start.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://images4-b.ravelrycache.com/uploads/ThatTessGirl/184218592/image_medium2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://images4-b.ravelrycache.com/uploads/ThatTessGirl/184218592/image_medium2.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
ThatTessGirl outfitted her husband with a truly awesome Princess Leia hat, which I believe earned her a nomination (well-deserved!) in the September prizes thread.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://images4-b.ravelrycache.com/uploads/krazykt82000/184477181/IMG_1855_medium.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://images4-b.ravelrycache.com/uploads/krazykt82000/184477181/IMG_1855_medium.JPG" width="319" /></a></div>
krazykt82000 dyed this enviably beautiful roving. I love a good spooky-monsters type colourway.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://images4-b.ravelrycache.com/uploads/bbhatsNstuff/184177984/IMG_1364_medium.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://images4-b.ravelrycache.com/uploads/bbhatsNstuff/184177984/IMG_1364_medium.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
bbhatsnstuff knitted an adorably expressive ghost/pumpkin minisock.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://images4.ravelrycache.com/uploads/Melanthe/184762310/SDC13561_medium.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="http://images4.ravelrycache.com/uploads/Melanthe/184762310/SDC13561_medium.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
Melanthe knitted a perfect candy corn hat.<br />

All answers are due by 9pm Eastern Standard Time (New York time) on the date due. </div><div><br></div><div>For every card you get right you will get 1 point. I will track these and after I've gone through all the staff members whoever has the most points will receive an awesome badge just for them and up to $5 in a free pattern download on Ravelry!</div><div><br></div><div>In order to prevent the last few being too easy based on process of elimination I will not post the answers until the contest is over. Her crafting pursuits including knitting, weaving, dying, and spinning but weaving is her current passion. She is also a huge Seattle Seahawks fan. </div><div><br></div><div>2. <br />
But from more timely students than I, here are some amazing turn-ins from the second half of September.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://images4-b.ravelrycache.com/uploads/broknmachin14/183023496/IMG_1403_medium2.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://images4-b.ravelrycache.com/uploads/broknmachin14/183023496/IMG_1403_medium2.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
broknmachin14 wowed me with these wonderful photographs of her dyeing project---there's a skull, guys. And candles! And mysterious bottles of blood dye! <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://farm8.static.flickr.com/7399/9711392841_33d022b2b3_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://farm8.static.flickr.com/7399/9711392841_33d022b2b3_z.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
anneknits made a hat I would love to be wearing, come winter.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://images4-b.ravelrycache.com/uploads/Charityuk/183636787/uploadedImage_medium2.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://images4-b.ravelrycache.com/uploads/Charityuk/183636787/uploadedImage_medium2.png" width="263" /></a></div>
<br />
And a tinier hat, which comes with a cheer from me for CharityUK for conquering her fear of crochet by making it!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://images4.ravelrycache.com/uploads/andy8715/183435377/IMG_5810_medium2.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://images4.ravelrycache.com/uploads/andy8715/183435377/IMG_5810_medium2.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
andy8715, a braver crocheter than I, made this awesome basket with plarn. (Yarn made from plastic bags---a very cool idea, but really hard on the hands.)<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Stay tuned for next week, when I'm going to start flailing about Halloween themed projects---I already have some earmarked from September, but I expect October to make them increase exponentially, and I can't wait.</div>

<br />
This is Maria/venusfueri, a first year in Hufflepuff. I blog and podcast regularly over at<a href="http://subway-knits.blogspot.com/"> Subway Knits </a>when I do not have a pile of middle school homework to grade and take a break from my knitting.<br />
<br />
I will be blogging every Friday to share my experience as a first year in the cup and anything else that strikes my fancy that is cup related.<br />
<br />
This week's post is about the feelings of exhilaration and !!!!!!!!!! that comes with joining the cup and being sorted into a house. When the hat sorted me into Hufflepuff, I totally felt like this at first:<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-L30i88SiEWI/UinOyhj0ThI/AAAAAAAABuE/qWcHYyxVpYc/s1600/hysteria.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-L30i88SiEWI/UinOyhj0ThI/AAAAAAAABuE/qWcHYyxVpYc/s400/hysteria.png" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Be ready. There will be alot of Hyperbole and a Half references. </td></tr>
</tbody></table>
I got in! I decided to revisit the cup literally ATHELASTMINUTE and was able to submit my Tour de Fleece spinning for a class. Given that the cup is now extremely popular from the last time I visited, (which is another story) I also got mentally ready to be a full term NQFY.<br />
<br />
So now that I am in Hufflepuff, my feelings changed a bit after the classes, Quidditch, OWLs, games and everything else posted on September 1. After going through The Den and Hogwarts in general on my first day, I felt a little bit like this:<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-kvRjYQ8SCaQ/UinP23PPAyI/AAAAAAAABuQ/K4KmkxKLmeo/s1600/images.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="299" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-kvRjYQ8SCaQ/UinP23PPAyI/AAAAAAAABuQ/K4KmkxKLmeo/s400/images.jpeg" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">So, where do I go? Where are classes? What is quidditch? </td></tr>
</tbody></table>
I was very, very overwhelmed. Thankfully, Hufflepuff has a great support system with the Cetes and the Room of Requirement - if you are a firstie and stull not sure how to handle the madness that is the Cup quite yet, GO THERE FIRST.<br />
<br />
Cetes took me away from the madness that are the common rooms - Hufflepuff's, The Great Hall and the Firstie Common room is alot to keep up with, so the cete provides a space to participate in the fun albeit on a smaller scale (which is great for me because when I return to my Muggle Day Job™, things are going to get crazy out in the Muggle World!). <br />
<br />
The Room of Requirement is your one stop shop for everything related to the cup and a support network. It used to be known as HECK (erm, what the heck does HECK mean?) and I have found it really useful so far.<br />
<br />
As for Quidditch, well, here is where I learned my lesson as a firstie real quick. The most important thing that I have realized to get the most out of hte Cup is to peruse everything, but pick and choose wisely.<br />
<br />
For example, I still don't get Quidditch. I know I won't have time to play Quidditch. Therefore, I put the Quidditch thread on ignore.<br />
<br />
This lead to my next lesson and tip: it's totally okay to put threads on ignore. In fact, it cleans up the boards and helps you focus more on what you want to do and makes one's experience at Hogwarts a bit less overwhelming. There is definitely the urge to EXPLORE ALL THE THINGS! but you have 8 terms plus Baccalureate and even MA terms to complete. The Cup will be there. There will be time to play Quidditch if you can't figure it out now.<br />
<br />
One other thing, which is also very important to me: take care of yourselves. That means, do not let the Cup drive you mad - the point of the Cup is to have fun!<br />
<br />
On a more serious note, take care of your wrists/back/any body part that gets affected by knitting. I have RSI in my left wrist due to the 2010 Ravelympics (there, I SAID it) and it flares up.<br />
<br />
These past few weeks my wrist has been acting out - not pain per se, but its telling me that it's tired and I can't do much. It kills me to just sit there and putz through the Internet using my right hand (I'm left handed, which makes things even more annoying) but I know in the long run, I will be able to knit for the whole Cup, as opposed to checking into the Infirmary next<br />
week.<br />
<br />
Do you have any tips to share, firstie or not? What lessons have you learned so far about yourselves as a knitter/crocheter/crafter from the Cup? Share in the comments below!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2729151915520341932.post-47746577309601171792013-09-12T12:00:00.000-07:002013-09-12T12:14:55.700-07:00Homework Highlights (Chosen by Random.org)You excellent Puffs are keeping me on my toes---as I peruse the class threads this month, I'm keeping a text file on my computer with some of my favourite projects, and just from the first ten days of term, I already have so many that I decided to let a random number generator pick which ones to showcase today!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh7VcCtCBKhd4_wOCQy6dJAMbhATr7YEvr7BLdrg0VzK3kYO6ocOJJeaNOjI15OS36ofufGp6N_t-q71fe54EfuPCGWACBNkQvCjLPYdI6T0mxYeRQ6eiUK0r_Yavct2mD_UPgaVPCc7RnK/s1600/Wallet_Outside_medium2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="239" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh7VcCtCBKhd4_wOCQy6dJAMbhATr7YEvr7BLdrg0VzK3kYO6ocOJJeaNOjI15OS36ofufGp6N_t-q71fe54EfuPCGWACBNkQvCjLPYdI6T0mxYeRQ6eiUK0r_Yavct2mD_UPgaVPCc7RnK/s320/Wallet_Outside_medium2.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
Taking advantage of the non-Ravelry-crafting option at the Magical Menagerie this month, HogwartsKnitting submitted a beautiful sewn tea wallet.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://images4.ravelrycache.com/uploads/WAgirl98/181895643/1378166242859_medium2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://images4.ravelrycache.com/uploads/WAgirl98/181895643/1378166242859_medium2.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
Also at the Magical Menagerie, WAgirl98 made this gorgeous cabled hat, and crafted a very cool story to go with about how its cables resemble the ears of magical shape-shifting rabbits.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://images4.ravelrycache.com/uploads/TinyStitcher/182092697/IMG_0330_medium2.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="239" src="http://images4.ravelrycache.com/uploads/TinyStitcher/182092697/IMG_0330_medium2.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
I love it when a project/turn-in photo features the crafter's pet, so I'm a big fan of this homework from TinyStitcher, who is keeping her gorgeous feline familiar happy with a crocheted fish.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://images4.ravelrycache.com/uploads/tricotjo/181984150/file0_medium2" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://images4.ravelrycache.com/uploads/tricotjo/181984150/file0_medium2" width="180" /></a></div>
<br />
Tricotjo made this very dashing mustachioed cowl, a most excellent disguise for getting around Knockturn Alley.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://images4.ravelrycache.com/uploads/ashleybah/181851596/IMG_6054_medium2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="http://images4.ravelrycache.com/uploads/ashleybah/181851596/IMG_6054_medium2.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div>
In "projects that you are definitely going to see in the Prize Nominations Thread," ashleybah knitted this completely perfect Care of Magical Creatures charm bracelet.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://images4-b.ravelrycache.com/uploads/LadyDragonsinger/182634551/IMG_20130907_090943_644_medium2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://images4-b.ravelrycache.com/uploads/LadyDragonsinger/182634551/IMG_20130907_090943_644_medium2.jpg" width="180" /></a></div>
Please join me in boggling at this turn-in from LadyDragonsinger: her <i>73rd</i> Molly Weasley sweater. That isn't a typo! I'm pretty sure that kind of creative feat requires actual magic.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://images4.ravelrycache.com/uploads/HazelRose/182037294/Potages_Cauldron_Shop_September_2013_pages_medium2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://images4.ravelrycache.com/uploads/HazelRose/182037294/Potages_Cauldron_Shop_September_2013_pages_medium2.jpg" width="256" /></a></div>
HazelRose has been turning in a lot of cool woven projects, but I think my favourite is this ingenious way to use practice squares (and this idea could work nicely for knitted or crocheted squares/motifs, too) by turning them into a needlebook. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://images4.ravelrycache.com/uploads/Maylablue/182464917/IMG_0005_medium.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://images4.ravelrycache.com/uploads/Maylablue/182464917/IMG_0005_medium.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
In the "yarny turn-ins I would like to get on my hooks" category, Maylablue dyed some amazingly vivid yarn in Gryffindor and Ravenclaw colours---the red is even her handspun.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://images4-b.ravelrycache.com/uploads/jpester/182546546/_DSC0073_medium2.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="212" src="http://images4-b.ravelrycache.com/uploads/jpester/182546546/_DSC0073_medium2.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
And finally, a selection from Detention at the Leaky Cauldron in the form of a shawl of breathtaking beauty by jpester.</div>

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgcrc2HKU8DUx6zczOgLpLdMhEjYsljA9LtLiB57m0Z8Re7UyfQ9RQi7qFUlcBA1IOYxjtILQl-n2q3IWISkUJhN8R5zWxsD-G3bOYIrWymLTxeN9NVbFfducjnQ5EF6F0u6nRnjTd4c1Zw/s1600/leaspuffs.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgcrc2HKU8DUx6zczOgLpLdMhEjYsljA9LtLiB57m0Z8Re7UyfQ9RQi7qFUlcBA1IOYxjtILQl-n2q3IWISkUJhN8R5zWxsD-G3bOYIrWymLTxeN9NVbFfducjnQ5EF6F0u6nRnjTd4c1Zw/s320/leaspuffs.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
To begin with, a special cheer for Lea67000, who was not only the first badger to turn in a project (in the form of a charming moon and stars hexipuff) at this month's Detention Classroom, she also swung by the Apothecary, Quality Quidditch Supplies, and Flourish & Blotts with more! <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i81.photobucket.com/albums/j227/lyonette/DSC05655.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="199" src="http://i81.photobucket.com/albums/j227/lyonette/DSC05655.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
Lyonette also paid visits to both the Apothecary and Quality Quidditch Supplies with some mini granny square motifs.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://images4.ravelrycache.com/uploads/torsparkles/181644209/file0_medium2" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://images4.ravelrycache.com/uploads/torsparkles/181644209/file0_medium2" width="240" /></a></div>
Torsparkles made the Magical Menagerie much more adorable with her sweet knitted fish and beautiful cat.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://images4-b.ravelrycache.com/uploads/littlefit/181691536/IMG-20130901-00301_medium2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://images4-b.ravelrycache.com/uploads/littlefit/181691536/IMG-20130901-00301_medium2.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
littlefit christened Potage's Cauldron Shop with this pleasingly coloured dishcloth.<br />
<br />
Meanwhile, back in Detention (currently being held in the Leaky Cauldron)...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhaDVl0yk_Xk242IHmQv88S8rKm-ZhJjX_MLesBWD384M-RkWmWu2BoPAciz9rzgH9Pa4NTPJp3PtzGpc5_JMtOglxfq9iArSfkK_fHmAiMr9lgzPquTZjA0XpgVgzGjZPUYCUt6UuqWzt1/s1600/puff.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhaDVl0yk_Xk242IHmQv88S8rKm-ZhJjX_MLesBWD384M-RkWmWu2BoPAciz9rzgH9Pa4NTPJp3PtzGpc5_JMtOglxfq9iArSfkK_fHmAiMr9lgzPquTZjA0XpgVgzGjZPUYCUt6UuqWzt1/s320/puff.jpg" width="262" /></a></div>
Another very pretty hexipuff, this time from thatgirl1225. I love that yarn.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://images4.ravelrycache.com/uploads/Jenstc2003/181552373/GEDC1713_medium2.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://images4.ravelrycache.com/uploads/Jenstc2003/181552373/GEDC1713_medium2.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
And our first Sock Turn-In of the term by Jenstc2003, Monkey socks that are causing me more yarn envy.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhS5K2vy-y6vUUMkMJGuTgEpLD7Q_FpnphvXRpBq9LnxzuU91B3Um5-R48VRA2ZUBUP1kQnX8TzKgJrqNdVbzCxZvisfHK7rdwPF44jl1b2Wnfy5GeGkFdpLVJNsYrvUcaEVeqOwqVuBDPl/s1600/garments.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhS5K2vy-y6vUUMkMJGuTgEpLD7Q_FpnphvXRpBq9LnxzuU91B3Um5-R48VRA2ZUBUP1kQnX8TzKgJrqNdVbzCxZvisfHK7rdwPF44jl1b2Wnfy5GeGkFdpLVJNsYrvUcaEVeqOwqVuBDPl/s320/garments.jpg" width="320" /></a> </div>
There were plenty of other garment projects, too. A gorgeous baby sweater by Chococupcake, a hat in amazing yarn by texaninalaska, some clothes for a<a href="http://www.ravelry.com/projects/suseknits/bunty-bunny-rabbit-with-removeable-dress" target="_blank"> bunny</a> by Suseknits (click the link for extra cute), a crocheted baby sweater that made me think <i>ooh, I have to try that pattern!</i> by vtgirl, and a hat in swoonworthy colourwork by PatriciaO.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhjaYF9nMULPmqjY4W3HfoA0sqiSalaJPOYHlokbCdGkP5uB7ImvkO8LkjIYbT_yM7U-DDuKtRpg7rfxV17S4alTGCLqiSPcr96cnsZH3_bYXji_Edc4vavUEF28xEJIvgBxbKCPa8HhhqP/s1600/toys.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhjaYF9nMULPmqjY4W3HfoA0sqiSalaJPOYHlokbCdGkP5uB7ImvkO8LkjIYbT_yM7U-DDuKtRpg7rfxV17S4alTGCLqiSPcr96cnsZH3_bYXji_Edc4vavUEF28xEJIvgBxbKCPa8HhhqP/s320/toys.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
There's nothing like a little Detention to nudge one into some limb-attaching on an unfinished toy. Webschaf submitted this mischievous monkey, and Twirlymom delighted me with the lovely Sheldon the turtle.<br />
<br />
We are off to an <i>amazing</i> start, fellow Puffs, and I can't wait to see what you all make this term, and share some of my favourites on the HuffleBlog. And if you're stuck, the <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/discuss/the-den/2678854/">Room of Requirement</a> is there to help you find the right place for your projects.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2729151915520341932.post-71621640329198402952013-09-02T06:25:00.000-07:002013-09-02T09:22:00.604-07:00It's Labor Day! Let's Get Ready for Quidditch!Good day Quidditch Fans! It's Labo(u)r Day in the U.S. and Canada, the unofficial End of Summer for muggles and the beginning of the Fall Term of The House Cup for us!<br />
<br />
Along with the beginning of the Term is the beginning of Quidditch! Our Headmistress, yarnvista, had this to say, "The Quidditch season promises to be exciting, and there should be
something for everyone. Since Quidditch is a very unpredictable game
everyone should be prepared for any possibility. There is more than one
path to victory, and strategy is more important than ever!"<br />
<br />
Doesn't that make you say, "Hmm? Tell me more." Here is my understanding of Quidditch this term.<br />
<br />
There are TWO paths to earn points. Path 1 runs 3 September through 5 November and Path 2 is three events, one each month. Here's the breakdown:<br />
<br />
Path #1) <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/discuss/hp-knitting-crochet-house-cup/2681697/1-25#2" target="_blank">Explore Quidditch Positions</a> (3 Sep - 5 Nov)[150 Points possible for each chaser!]:<br />
<ul>
<li><b>Beaters:</b> Knit, crochet, weave or spin up to 15 projects using 50 yards/project minimum. Each project will earn 10 points.</li>
<li><b>Chasers:</b> Knit, crochet, weave or spin up to 6 projects using 150 yards/project minimum. Each project will earn 25 points.</li>
<li><b>Keepers:</b> Knit, crochet, weave or spin up to 3 projects using 300 yards/project minimum. Each project will earn 50 points.</li>
<li><b>Seekers:</b> Knit, crochet, weave or spin up to 2 projects using 500 yards/project minimum. Each project will earn 75 points.</li>
</ul>
When you turn in your first item for this Activity, please let us
know which position you will be studying by including one of the
following tags. <b>Once you’ve turned in your first project you will be
locked into that position</b>, so choose wisely!<br />
TAG: HQ16Beater, HQ16Chaser, HQ16Keeper, or HQ16Seeker<br />
<br />
Path #2<br />
1) <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/discuss/hp-knitting-crochet-house-cup/2681697/1-25#3" target="_blank">Get to Know Your New Nembus!</a> (5 -16 September) [Each project will be awarded 15 points. 1 project per player]:<br />
<br />
For this activity: <br />
Using any Ravelry-approved crafting method, craft something using “top-of-the-line” materials, colors or stitch patterns. <br />
Dyers: you may either dye a fiber that you feel is a luxury fiber or use a “top-of-the-line” dyeing method.<br />
Please tell us why this is something special for you to use.<br />
In this case, “top-of-the-line” is subjective. Use what you feel to
be top of the line. Don’t break the bank just to go out and buy that
skein of $4000 Quivit for this challenge. We want you to craft with
something that you think is a luxury. Love cotton? Craft with cotton.
Have a fondness for acrylic? Craft with acrylic. We just ask that you
tell us why you feel it is top-of-the-line to you.<br />
TAG: HQ16Nimbus<br />
<br />
2) <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/discuss/hp-knitting-crochet-house-cup/2681697/1-25#4" target="_blank">Pre-Match Jitters</a> (10 - 19 October)[One project per student, 15 points per project]:<br />
<br />
For this challenge: <br />
Option 1: Using any Ravelry-approved craft, create something to soothe your nerves before a Quidditch Match. <br />
Option 2: Using any Ravelry-approved craft, create something that makes you nervous or use a technique that makes you nervous.<br />
TAG: HQ16Jitters<br />
<br />
3) Victory! Butterbeers all around!! (17 - 28 November):<br />
joseybug, that sly Slytherin, is keeping the detail for this one under wraps, for now.<br />
<br />
Wow! Two ways to play this term! There should be something for everyone just as yarnvista said.<br />
<br />
That's all for now, I have some plotting to do...<br />
Until next time; Keep your eyes on the Golden Snitch.SharonLuvs2Knit2http://www.blogger.com/profile/04400683810510614056noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2729151915520341932.post-53893337619421085002013-08-26T07:13:00.000-07:002013-08-26T15:29:22.067-07:00Advanced Studies S13: OWLs Part 11And we're jumping right in!<br />

So let's see the OWLs! It's why you're here anyways.<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
We start with a spinning OWL from ChellBelle. She spun 8 oz of fibre into 4-ply cabled yarn on her spindle for her Herbology OWL:</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">

<br /></div>
<div>
alchemycat completed an Astronomy OWL by weaving scarves for different parts of the solar system. First up is the sun:</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgDbd_r5KKEDSDfdIyoTPPYcdH7j6SJhey97K6LXNU9fbj3h8ZUR8F_f_5djhYjpOH-2z3pT1pUfZ05Kmg4LNnlDeu1Piswysh5zsbz8WX_-bcdZacOAg8zq16y0PaGqfdw1qVkuDzPj4A/s640/blogger-image--1259612451.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgDbd_r5KKEDSDfdIyoTPPYcdH7j6SJhey97K6LXNU9fbj3h8ZUR8F_f_5djhYjpOH-2z3pT1pUfZ05Kmg4LNnlDeu1Piswysh5zsbz8WX_-bcdZacOAg8zq16y0PaGqfdw1qVkuDzPj4A/s640/blogger-image--1259612451.jpg" /></a></div>

<br />
And... I've saved the best for last! For Care of Magical Creatures, theresmiling who wrote an AMAZING homework submission to go with her crafted project. I've included it here because I was so impressed with it:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjWwtua4trxHMRckM6QKCgs_ozLKm7gq2hAEzNXI_Cop_Yx1bL5IVlUKa-C6U6Ea7JwBMmRalgAON95oql1qg_125rSZw_oEvvY6vmLqOR9FAm2PgVdpl_97oaaxb43wQbYV4DKCe7n6lo/s1600/theresmiling.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="238" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjWwtua4trxHMRckM6QKCgs_ozLKm7gq2hAEzNXI_Cop_Yx1bL5IVlUKa-C6U6Ea7JwBMmRalgAON95oql1qg_125rSZw_oEvvY6vmLqOR9FAm2PgVdpl_97oaaxb43wQbYV4DKCe7n6lo/s320/theresmiling.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="background-color: white; font-family: Verdana, 'Lucida Sans Unicode', 'Lucida Grande', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12.222222328186035px; padding: 0px;">
Once upon a midnight busy, while I studied hard and fizzy, (don’t ask)<br />
Over many a quaint and dodgy volume of important lore,<br />
While I scribbled, nearly smearing, suddenly there came a knocking,<br />
As of some one gently plopping, plopping at my dormroom door.<br />
‘Tis some visitor’, I muttered, ‘knocking at my dormroom door’<br />
‘Only this, and nothing more.’</div>
<div style="background-color: white; font-family: Verdana, 'Lucida Sans Unicode', 'Lucida Grande', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12.222222328186035px; padding: 0px;">
Ah, distinctly I remember in there slithered something black,<br />
And it slithered all in silence over there upon the floor.<br />
Eagerly I wished the morrow; - vainly I had sought to borrow<br />
form my profs some kind of info – info ‘bout the Lethifold;<br />
For the beast that slithered hither whom the elders named Leth’fold<br />
Gone shall be for evermore.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; font-family: Verdana, 'Lucida Sans Unicode', 'Lucida Grande', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12.222222328186035px; padding: 0px;">
And the shiny quick elusive movement of the creature’s <span class="match" style="background-color: #ffffaa; border-bottom-color: rgb(194, 235, 177); border-bottom-style: dotted; border-bottom-width: 1px; padding: 2px;">body</span><br />
Thrilled me – filled me with enormous terrors never felt before;<br />
So that now, to still the beating of my heart, I stood repeating:<br />
‘Tis some creature just that came inside here through my dormroom door,<br />
Some small creature just that came inside here through my dormroom door,<br />
This it is and nothing more.’</div>
<div style="background-color: white; font-family: Verdana, 'Lucida Sans Unicode', 'Lucida Grande', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12.222222328186035px; padding: 0px;">
Presently my soul grew stronger, hesitating then no longer,<br />
‘Dang’, said I, and ‘Creature, truly it’s your death that I implore;<br />
For your nature’s not the sweetest, and your manners not the neatest,<br />
And so sneak’ly you came in here, in here through my dormroom door,<br />
That I must do what I have to – kick you out right through that door,<br />
Out with you, an nothing more.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; font-family: Verdana, 'Lucida Sans Unicode', 'Lucida Grande', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12.222222328186035px; padding: 0px;">
Deep into the darkness peering, long I stood there searching, fearing,<br />
Doubting, thinking thoughts no muggle ever dared to think before;<br />
But the quarrel was soon finished, and the creature quickly banished,<br />
And the only charm there spoken was ‘Curtanum Crochetio’;<br />
This I whispered, and for safety, murmured quick the charm once more;<br />
Merely this and nothing more.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; font-family: Verdana, 'Lucida Sans Unicode', 'Lucida Grande', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12.222222328186035px; padding: 0px;">
Now into the kitchen turning, all my soul within me burning,<br />
I put the thing right at the window, somewhat lower there to screen<br />
my own space from strangers views. There it’s hanging at my window frame.<br />
Let me see then, what thereat is, and this curtain here explore,<br />
Let my heart be still a moment and this curtain here explore;<br />
‘Tis a raven, nothing more.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; font-family: Verdana, 'Lucida Sans Unicode', 'Lucida Grande', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12.222222328186035px; padding: 0px;">
Dear Professors, I’ll present you, here, with joy and flutter,<br />
What I’ve done with that black creature that was named the Lethifold<br />
Not the least resistance made he; not a minute fought of brawled he,<br />
But, without a sound or squeal, let me jinx him into this;<br />
This black curtain of black cotton looking like a raven’s twin,<br />
Looking like a raven’s twin.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; font-family: Verdana, 'Lucida Sans Unicode', 'Lucida Grande', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12.222222328186035px; padding: 0px;">
